Why connection quality matters
According to the FMEA Rating of PV Module Failures by TÜV Rheinland, failures in DC connections are among the most critical factors leading to:
- power losses
- increased temperatures
- fire hazards
- higher maintenance costs
- reduced system lifetime
In TÜV Rheinland’s ranking, mixing different connector types is by far the #1 cause of PV module failure — three times higher than front-glass breakage.
Connectors are the lifelines of a PV system. Using non-original or incompatible connectors dramatically increases failure risk and can compromise system performance for decades.

Why mixing connector brands is not allowed
Stäubli fully complies with all international standards governing PV interconnection and explicitly prohibits cross-connections between connectors from different manufacturers.
Legal and technical framework
| IEC 62852 (EN 62852) | PV connector product standard |
| UL 6703 | Connector product standard |
| UL 1703 | PV module standard |
| IEC 60364-7-712:2017 | PV installation standard |
| IEC 62548 | PV installation guidelines |
| — | Manufacturer assembly instructions |
“Male and female connectors shall be of the same type from the same manufacturer.”
UL certification applies only when connectors from the same product family and manufacturer are mated.
Is it worth the risk?
High-quality eBOS components reduce LCOE and increase project bankability.
Although DC connections represent only 0.003% of the total cost of a photovoltaic installation, using non-original MC4 copies provides a superficial saving of just 0.001%.
Non-original connectors may cost 30% less, but the financial benefit is negligible, while the risk of failure is significantly higher.
Risks: increased temperatures · power losses · premature system aging · fire hazards · higher maintenance costs · loss of certification and compliance
Is it worth the risk? The answer is clear: no.
Choosing original Stäubli MC4 connectors ensures maximum safety, reliability and long-term performance — with virtually no impact on total project cost.
